Whereabouts is a free photo-geography game: look at one real photograph of somewhere on Earth, drop a pin on a world map, and get scored by how close you landed. Every reveal teaches you what gave the place away — scripts on the signs, which side of the road traffic keeps to, the light, the landscape. Many players find it while searching for a free GeoGuessr alternative without a paywall: Whereabouts is not a street-view clone, but it scratches the same read-the-world itch, free, in any browser.
| Mode | What you get | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Challenge | 5 photos, same for everyone on your calendar date; streak tracking on your device | Free |
| Endless | Unlimited rounds from a pool of 285 photos across 136 countries | Free |
| Region runs | 5-round runs inside one region — Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, Oceania — each with its own personal best | Free |
| Atlas | Which countries you have seen and how well you read each one | Free |
| Challenge a friend | A link that gives your friend the exact same 5 places, with your score to beat | Free |
| Difficulty | Easy narrows Endless/Region to the world's most-visited countries and adds a continent hint on the Daily; Hard is the full mix, no hint | Free |
| Landmarks | A mode built entirely on famous places — queued behind a dedicated photo set, not live yet | Coming soon |
Each round awards up to 5,000 points by great-circle distance: 5000 × e^(−km/1400), with a full-score bullseye inside 15 km. Five rounds make a 25,000-point maximum. Landing on the right country typically earns thousands; the right continent still counts.
There is no login and nothing to install. Streaks and bests live in your browser's own storage. Cosmetic map themes and a gold pin are included in the Accentle Day Pass or Accentle Pass — every mode of the game itself is free for everyone, always.
Every photo is an openly licensed photograph from Wikimedia Commons, chosen because it contains real clues. Every reveal names the photographer and license, with a link to the original. The world map is drawn from open vector data — the game makes zero requests to outside services while you play.
